I’ve often joked over the years that writing fantasy was especially fun because I got to “play god” for a while. But it wasn’t until I created a very human character, Emma, in my historical fiction, Living on Sisu: The 1913 Union Copper Strike Tragedy, that I began to realize more than a grain of truth in this sort of “playing god”. Ever since childhood, I’ve loved music, especially songs of praise. I’d sit for hours with my mother’s Beautiful Bible Stories and sing the songs in the back. I didn’t always understand all the words, but singing them comforted me nonetheless. It was like having Jesus in the same room with me. I sang I Love to Tell the Story, Rock of Ages and, of course all the Christmas hymns, with enthusiasm, if not with skill."Make a joyful noise unto the Lord" (Psalm 47:1) could have been my motto.
