Issue 29, Feb 2010Upon graduation from Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill. in 1952, Harold Hein was called to missionary work in Nigeria. His new wife, June Guske, a Lutheran school teacher, accompanied him to Obot Idim, Uyo, Nigeria where Rev. Hein was to oversee fifteen churches and eleven district mission schools. With no language instruction, Pastor Hein, like other missionaries, used interpreters to translate into the Ibibio tongue. At the time the Ibibio people used the Efik Bible for their Scripture. After several years as a district manager, in 1955 he started teaching part-time at Lutheran Hich school and the &l ...

Issue 27, Dec 2010God tells us that we should always be ready to give an explanation for our faith ( 1 Peter 3:15). Thankfully, He also tells us that when He gives us an opportunity to bear witness to the Gospel, we don’t need to worry because He will give us the words to speak! Is this possible? How? Issue 16, Jan 2009This is the final study of the differences between the Christian and the Muslim faiths, based upon my book, “ The Qur’an and the Bible – A Comparison.” My final question: Who is the God of Abraham? In other words, who is the true God? As never before, we are aware of many religions and many views of God. How can anyone be certain who the true God is? Both the Muslim and the Christian faiths profess belief in the God of Abraham. The question then is: “Who is the God of Abraham?” Muslims look for the answer in the revelation given to Muhammad. As the Qur’an states, “We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abrah ...

Issue 15, Dec 2008 At Christmas time Muslim outreach into our communities will announce that they believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus and that he is the Messiah. Are we surprised? Are we perhaps amazed that the late Yasser Arafat, President of the Palestinian Council, for many years (excluding his last few years) attended Christmas Services in the Church of the Holy Nativity in Bethlehem? Why would Arafat, a Muslim, celebrate Christmas in a Christian church? Just what do Muslims believe about the birth of Jesus? And why is it important for us to know how it compares with the account of the birth of Christ in the Bible? Concerning the birth of Jesus, the Qur’an in Surah 19:23-26 describes how Mary ...
