Issue 5, Feb 2008 A new year brings hope of new things. Perhaps this year will be better than the one before. Perhaps we'll make more money, get a better job, get married, have children, get well or whatever it is we hoped and prayed for last year. Indeed, the Bible teaches us to be people of hope. The Bible is a book of hope, hope for the future. The Children of Israel and those of us have become Children of Israel by faith in Jesus Christ ( Read More »

Issue 4, Jan 2008Last month I promised to say more about prophecy. However, before I do that I need to make an observation. I was reading about the current controversy in the Episcopalian/Anglican communion over homosexuality, female clergy and ordination. Some of the commentators referred to three sources of authority in their midst: Scripture, tradition and reason. Several of them dismissed Scripture to the inferior position of a book of ancient writings, having little relevance to the current scene and the current questions with which that fellowship is struggling. Obviously to those writers reason and science are far superior to outdated Biblical thinking of long ago. I find that curious, but common, even among Christians. Issue 2, Nov 2007 Last month I discussed the phenomenon of near death experiences (NDE). As indicated, there is much written about this subject, both in books, magazines and on the Internet. For instance, in August, 2007 Daniel Williams wrote a long article about NDE from a scientific viewpoint in Time magazine. Scientists prefer to keep the phenomenon confined to this life and avoid any discussion of what happens if the body is truly dead. So Williams concludes, “On balance, it's almost certain that NDEs happen in the theater of one's mind, and that in the absence of resuscitation, it's the brain's final sound and light s ...

Issue 1, Oct 2007 Alice was a delightful, intelligent lady in her eighties. Although legally blind, Alice managed quite well in an assisted living situation. Once, when visiting with her as part of my pastoral duties, she shared a very personal experience. She told me she had once been dead and now had no fear of death whatsoever. “I was during an operation many years ago,” she continued. “I suddenly left my body and hovered for a time near the ceiling of the operating room. I watched the doctors and nurses. They appeared to be frantic, rushing about, trying to bring me back to life. And then I was suddenly pulled up and away, through some kind of a tunnel of brilliant light. It was so beautiful and calm that I cannot find words to describe it. “I came to a wonderful place where I saw my parents and some a ...
