Issue 28, Jan 2010 The recent article by Larry Harvey in ROH Ezine about the use of tangible images in the worship life of the church calls to mind my experiences during the 1950's and 60's as a missionary in Africa. The indigenous religion of many Africans involved animism, a belief that spirits or a spirit-power could inhabit tangible items. It is believed that these items could inflict harm or bestow good upon a person. In 1953 I encountered a notable event with animism.
